Bethesda Game Studios (BGS) didn’t just happen to donate Steam keys for The Elder Scrolls IV: Remastered to the mod’s developers (we wrote about this before)!
Prior to the release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, many believed that BGS would finally crack down on the mod, claiming copyright infringement and stopping development (just think of the ridiculously strict stance taken by Nintendo and Take-Two…). By the way, the mod rebuilds Oblivion in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, so you could call it a full conversion mod.
The Skyblivion team has always been complimentary and positive about Bethesda and Virtuos’ remaster, as the modders do not see the new version of the 2006 RPG as competition. And it seems that they think similarly on the “other side”. Proof of this can be seen in the free Steam keys for the Oblivion remaster that have been handed out to modders. In a world where litigious mega-corporations send lawyers after their most passionate fans for daring to touch their IP, this friendly behavior is a real credit to Bethesda and the Skyblivion team. But the story is not over yet.
A new developer video has surfaced on YouTube (embedded below), and Dan Lee, the art and development director who worked on the original The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76, once again acknowledged the work of the Skyblivion team, saying, “Even though I worked on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, I’m still excited about Skyblivion. I’m excited to see their take on what we’ve done in the past. I think it’s a great year for Oblivion fans. I think what they’re doing is really special.”
Bethesda even played some footage of the mod as Lee spoke enthusiastically about it… if that’s not an accolade, nothing is!
