Leslie Benzies’ new game, MindsEye, has come under fire for allegedly offering a hollow open-world experience, but a new four-minute uncut gameplay video aims to push back against the criticism – here’s what you need to know.
After months of near silence and a lack of proper promotional content, MindsEye – the ambitious sci-fi action title led by Leslie Benzies, best known for his work on GTA V – is finally making waves again. Developer Build A Rocket Boy dropped a four-minute uncut gameplay video on Twitter to counter growing skepticism about the game’s scope and authenticity.
The video, shared via the official Everywhere Twitter account (the platform where the game will be launched), introduces Jacob Diaz, a former soldier fitted with a neural implant that gives him fragmented memories. Instead of reinventing the genre, MindsEye sticks to tried-and-true mechanics like gunplay and driving, evoking comparisons to GTA.
But doubts remain about the so-called “fake” open world. The footage doesn’t clarify whether the open world is genuinely interactive or merely set dressing. According to the devs, the game’s structure may mirror the original Mafia by 2K Games, focusing on linear missions with some freedom of movement – which suggests that the city of Redrock could be little more than a backdrop designed to mimic a vibrant world.
Studio Pushes Back as Skeptics Demand More
So why is MindsEye under such scrutiny? With a June 10 release date looming, many are baffled by the lack of visibility for a project tied to a major name like Leslie Benzies. Short gameplay snippets have been the only teasers so far, leading some gamers to label the project underwhelming or even fake.
Comments like “Is this even real?” and “It doesn’t look worth the hype” have become increasingly common. The developers’ Twitter statement – “Here are four uninterrupted minutes of MindsEye” – seems like a direct attempt to silence critics. Yet even now, many fans are calling for a playable demo, arguing that a flashy trailer won’t be enough to convince them to spend their money.
Meanwhile, some influencers who had early hands-on time with the game have shared lukewarm feedback. Several noted that the in-game city feels lifeless, and others suggested that “the launch should be postponed”. Nonetheless, Build A Rocket Boy has not mentioned any delays, so MindsEye remains set to debut on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on June 10.
