FromSoftware never intended for players to fight against each other in the Elden Ring spinoff.
As the release of the Japanese studio’s latest game draws near, the marketing machine is ramping up. That’s why IGN spoke to Junya Ishizaki, the director of Elden Ring Nightreign. One of the criticisms of the game is that it’s designed either for one or three players, leaving no real room for duos. Ishizaki admitted that duos were overlooked but said they are considering adding this feature in a future update.
“The simple answer is that this was something that was overlooked during development as a two-player option, and we’re sorry about that. As we said before, our goal was to create a three-player co-op game balanced for three players. That was our main focus and that’s what Nightreign is all about. Of course, as a player, I understand the desire to play solo sometimes, so we kept that in mind from the start. We put a lot of effort into creating an experience that is playable solo, as far as the rules and new systems allow. While we put all our effort into that aspect, we did overlook the perspective of duos, but this is something we’re looking at and considering for post-launch support,” Ishizaki said.
As for PvP, it’s simply not happening. Why? The director explained: “From the start, PvP was not something we actively considered for Nightreign. We wanted the core experience to be co-op multiplayer, and as we developed these character actions and unique abilities for each character, balancing and fine-tuning them for PvP not only proved to be extremely difficult but also took away from the ideas and scope we created for each character. We wanted to focus on PvE and co-op, so we knew where our priorities were,” Ishizaki added.
Elden Ring Nightreign will be released on May 30 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
