Even though Valve has yet to officially announce the game, we’re slowly learning more about it than we probably should… but with the number three in the title, all we can do is speculate.
HLX, the long-awaited game that’s supposed to be Half-Life 3, is rumored to include a major story twist that might not be widely appreciated. This surfaced on the Half-Life subreddit. The well-known leaker GabeFollower commented during a livestream by another Valve insider, Tyler McVicker, saying that “he thinks people might not like it.”
Leakers have so far been reluctant to reveal story details, which are reportedly being debated in certain online circles. No other commentary was made, but it will be fascinating to see why this story hook might prove divisive, especially considering Valve’s famously strict playtesting process. Even if the main story does turn out to be as polarizing as GabeFollower suggested, it’s unlikely to be a huge problem for a game like Half-Life 3, which fans have been waiting for since 2007, when Half-Life 2: Episode 2 was released.

Fortunately, we probably won’t have to wait much longer to learn more about the HLX project, which is rumored to be the third main installment in the series. The game is currently in playtesting. It might be unveiled this summer, with a release planned for late winter. Development is reportedly nearing completion, with the game playable from start to finish. The development team is now focused on optimization and polishing, as content and mechanical expansions are likely already locked in.
Back in 2007, The Orange Box was released for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, containing Half-Life 2, its first and second episodes, Team Fortress 2, and Portal. It’s been a long time coming for Valve…
