EA Cancels Black Panther Game and Shuts Down Cliffhanger Games

Electronic Arts faces a monumental failure as it officially announces the cancellation of the Black Panther game, spelling disaster for the studio. Cliffhanger Games, the team that had been developing the AAA Black Panther project for the past two years, is now permanently closed.

 

Ever since Marvel cemented its place in the movie industry, fans have dreamed of video games that could bring their favorite heroes to life, and Black Panther was a prime candidate. His commanding presence as the King of Wakanda, coupled with advanced technology and intense combat, made him perfect for a major single-player AAA title. The idea of exploring an open-world Wakanda generated enormous excitement, and EA was hard at work making that vision a reality. But according to IGN, EA has officially pulled the plug on the Black Panther game after more than two years of development. The biggest casualty in this shake-up is Cliffhanger Games, the two-year-old studio, which EA has now permanently shut down. In an internal email, EA President Laura Miele explained that this move was made to focus on “key growth opportunities.”

The Black Panther project was being built with Unreal Engine 5 and was planned as an open-world action-adventure game. “These are difficult decisions. They impact people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared unforgettable moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them, including exploring new opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success placing people in new roles,” Miele emphasized.

In addition to laying off dozens of employees at Cliffhanger Games, EA has also cut staff across its mobile divisions and central teams. Moving forward, EA plans to focus on key franchises like Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends. Development on the Iron Man game and the third Star Wars Jedi installment will continue uninterrupted. Meanwhile, BioWare is still working on Mass Effect 5 despite layoffs linked to poor sales of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. EA Sports continues to operate as an independent unit, unaffected by these cuts. In the end, time, money, resources, and people have all been lost—never to return.
