TECH NEWS – Charles Tremblay, vice president of technology at CD Projekt RED (CDPR), believes several key components will help the Switch 2 outperform the PlayStation 4.
Charles Tremblay spoke to IGN about the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 port for the Nintendo Switch 2, which began development in the summer of 2023. He discussed various challenges the CDPR team had to overcome to get the game running smoothly on the new system. One of the main issues was the system’s non-x86 architecture, which required deep changes at the engine level. Nvidia DLSS was also a crucial tool that helped the developers boost performance and visual quality. The tech is also highly scalable across different platforms.
DLSS is just one of several features that allow the Nintendo Switch 2 to exceed the PlayStation 4 in overall performance. Tremblay pointed out that the mechanical drive in previous-gen consoles was a major bottleneck — something the Switch 2 doesn’t suffer from. Additionally, the increased RAM makes it possible for Cyberpunk 2077 to run more efficiently and even include the Phantom Liberty expansion in its new version.
30 FPS is the target, 40 FPS is the sweet spot
Although the Cyberpunk 2077 version for the Switch 2 won’t rival the PC edition in visual fidelity, that wasn’t the goal. The CDPR team aimed to deliver a fun and platform-optimized experience that holds steady at 30 FPS. According to Tremblay, 40 FPS provides a solid compromise compared to the modern standard of 60 FPS on most consoles. The game will be one of the Switch 2’s launch titles when it debuts on June 5, 2025.
