PlayStation Studios, Marvel Games, and Arc System Works have joined forces to create a fast-paced, visually stunning 4v4 tag team brawler: Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, launching in 2026 for PS5 and PC.
Arc System Works, the studio behind genre-defining titles like Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ, is now channeling its expertise into the Marvel Universe. With intense 4-on-4 battles, jaw-dropping visuals, and intuitive mechanics, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is shaping up to be the next big thing in fighting games.
“From the very beginning, we aimed to make Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls a game that players of all skill levels could enjoy,” said Kazuto Sekine, the game’s director and lead combat designer. “Unlike traditional tag fighters that require mastering multiple characters, here you only need to learn one character to jump into the action. We designed the mechanics to support both classic inputs and simplified commands, so anyone can dive in and experience fast-paced team battles.”
Michael Francisco, Senior Product Development Manager at Marvel Games, added: “Our long-time partners at PlayStation and Arc System Works have poured immense talent and passion into reimagining the Marvel Universe in a way only they could. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is proof of their mastery and deep love for Marvel. Players are in for one wild ride.”
Iconic Characters Reimagined
The roster includes a bold mix of Marvel icons, including Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, Storm, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, and Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes). ArcSys has overhauled each character’s visual design and fighting style to fit the game’s unique vision. “It was tough narrowing down the roster,” explained Takeshi Yamanaka, the game’s producer. “We wanted characters who truly represent Marvel, while also delivering a balance of fighting styles—and of course, we’ve included a few surprises and first-time fighting game entrants.”
Initially, the team considered a Western comic-style shader, but that idea was eventually dropped. “Marvel asked us to lean into the Arc System Works aesthetic,” Yamanaka said. “So we shifted toward a Japanimation look that fans of our previous games will recognize immediately.”
A New Tag Battle Evolution
In combat, multiple characters can appear simultaneously for team attacks and assists, expanding the tactical possibilities. Sekine said this system offers something truly new for the genre. “We debated different formats: should it be 1v1, the classic 3v3? But in the end, we wanted chaotic, over-the-top battles where multiple characters clash on screen. That’s what defines both team fighting games and Marvel comics.”
Character kits include normal strikes, cinematic Ultimate Skills, and special moves tailored to each hero’s comic book powers. But the gameplay depth goes beyond individual characters. The team has also redefined what it means to be a tag team brawler, delivering rich strategic layers across all modes.
Stages in Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls are filled with Marvel-themed Easter eggs and multiple areas that change mid-fight. These transitions aren’t just visual spectacles—they offer new tactical opportunities in the middle of a match. The game is set to launch in 2026 on PlayStation 5 and PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store).
