The “Aztec Assassin’s Creed” Returns, but Gamers Rip Ecumene Aztec’s First Gameplay Trailer! [VIDEO]

“It looks like something from the PS2 era.” Ecumene Aztec is still in development, but gamers are already slamming the debut gameplay trailer. Ecumene Games dropped the video via IGN, but not every fan is buying it.

News on Ecumene Aztec—dubbed the “Aztec Assassin’s Creed”—has been nonexistent for months. When first announced in 2023, the premise of stepping into the sandals of an Aztec rebel fighting Spanish conquistadors stirred up social media, both with excitement and controversy. Yet after the initial buzz, skepticism set in as fans spotted plenty of historical clichés. Since then, the devs have kept their heads down, completely reworking the project and promising a new gameplay trailer for June. After a long wait, we’ve finally got a peek at the story and some in-game action.

The IGN-exclusive trailer has already sparked plenty of reactions online. This time, though, the debate isn’t about historical authenticity or the premise; it’s about the game looking rough and unpolished. YouTube comments show plenty of skepticism, with users calling the title “unfinished” and in desperate need of more work.

“The concept is good, but please don’t release the game yet, it needs some work,” writes _quiet_935 on YouTube. KaptainKuba echoes that: “I’m interested in the premise, but the game still feels rough. It needs more polish.” Others, like jgmaster12, pull no punches: “This feels like it’s from the PS2 era and the combat looks horrible.” While some gamers think Ecumene Aztec could turn things around with some fixes, others have already lost hope.

Still, the fact is, Ecumene Games isn’t giving up—and they’re still building their fanbase. The team has revamped major parts of the original idea, aiming for a more authentic experience and an adventure that delivers thrills. As the devs themselves put it: “Writing a narrative in this world means more than just being factually accurate. It means experiencing the world as it once was—and making it work within a game that demands stealth, action, and survival.”
