Borderlands 4 is no throwaway: its creators are promising an endgame nothing like what came before. Gearbox has now revealed concrete details about Borderlands 4’s endgame, which aims to fix the missteps of the past and finally deliver true replay value.
Making a looter shooter that captures millions is no easy task, but Gearbox seems to have cracked the code for winning—and keeping—a massive community. Borderlands 4 is aiming to rewrite the franchise’s golden formula, leaning into its unique humor, bold art direction, and character-centric gameplay. Players are already convinced this new chapter will outdo Borderlands 3, a feeling only strengthened by the latest major announcements.
Borderlands 4 Will Have the Best Endgame in Series History
In an ambitious interview with Game Informer, Gearbox Software pledged that Borderlands 4 will have the most robust endgame ever. The developers are focused on refining every aspect compared to previous titles, with a special focus on what happens *after* the campaign. The timing of this promise is no coincidence: Borderlands 4 is also confirmed to take its story more seriously, leaving some of its old gags behind.
Creative director Graeme Immins put it bluntly: “Personally, I care a lot about this, since my role on Borderlands 3 was all about the post-campaign experience. I know what matters to our community, and that’s already built into the game.” Community needs were prioritized from the earliest design phases of Borderlands 4: there are “intentional” decisions in the skill tree to ensure new content and the inevitable level cap increases fit naturally as the game evolves.
Timmins explained that Borderlands 3 ended up with a whopping 72 skill points, which led to chaos and actually reduced build diversity, making characters too similar as players unlocked everything. Borderlands 4 has been completely reimagined from the ground up, and the team has “big plans” they’ll reveal soon. The goal? Apply all the lessons from Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and the mainline Borderlands series to finally deliver “the best version of endgame yet.”
We’ll see if Gearbox is right on September 12. They’ve also unveiled ambitious DLC plans for Borderlands 4, already matching what was offered in Borderlands 3. Other big changes include a proper minimap—a feature longtime fans will appreciate, as it’s been in every previous entry.
