“Maybe they have some magic,” says a former Rockstar developer, who doubts GTA 6 will run at 60 FPS—but admits you never know with Rockstar. Obbe Vermeij, who worked on iconic GTA games, says 30 FPS is “the price you pay” for more complexity on screen.
We’re still months away from GTA 6 hitting PS5 and Xbox Series, but Grand Theft Auto VI already dominates gamer conversations everywhere. Fans are speculating about the adventures of Lucia and Jason, dreaming up wild plot twists, and theorizing about the setting. Former Rockstar dev Obbe Vermeij—who worked on San Andreas, Vice City, and GTA 3—has joined the debate, predicting the game probably won’t reach 60 FPS. Still, he admits Rockstar’s “magic” could surprise us all.
Speaking with the Kiwi Talkz channel, Vermeij was asked what frame rate players can expect in GTA 6. “I have no idea officially,” he said. “But if they need to sacrifice framerate to get more stuff on the screen or maintain a certain level of visuals, they’ll do it. My guess is it’ll probably be 30 [FPS].”
He continued: “It’s like a curse. We just have to get rid of it. Everyone says, ‘Oh, just make it 60 [FPS].’ But you always get to this point where it’s a trade-off between… OK, if you have 10 characters on the street, on screen, it doesn’t feel crowded enough. You should have about 50, and the price you pay for that is that your framerate drops a little bit. So it would probably be a sensible decision to go with 30, but maybe they have some magic and can go to 60.”
He’s not the first Rockstar alum to make this prediction: Mike York, who worked on GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, also made similar comments.
