One rumor suggested that a new Nintendo Direct broadcast from Nintendo would be coming soon.
On the latest episode of the Nate the Hate podcast, an insider confirmed that many developers still don’t have devkits, which is preventing them from working on Nintendo Switch 2 games. There’s no explanation for the lack of access. In the past, Nintendo operated much like Sony and Microsoft: the Japanese company maintained a priority list that ensured key partners got devkits first. But this time, Nintendo has taken a different approach, treating devkit access as if the system was still a closely guarded secret.
Some developers told the insider that they requested devkit access months ago and were told by the regional rep that they’d be contacted when the time was right. The lack of transparency is confusing and causing frustration for studios that still don’t have access. Even among studios and publishers who do have devkits, something unusual is happening. Some publishers are reportedly working on Switch 2 games, but for unexplained reasons, their announcements are being held back. Nate the Hate speculates that publishers don’t want to announce titles too early, to maintain hype from announcement to release—especially if these are ports of already available games.
Still, things could soon change, as the leaker confirmed that a new Nintendo Direct is being planned for the second half of this month, likely in the last week. There’s no word yet on the content, but speculation suggests third-party Nintendo Switch 2 games could be the main attraction, since Nintendo’s own lineup for the rest of the year is already clear, even if games like Metroid Prime 4: Echoes still don’t have a firm release date.
If this is a third-party Direct, we might get release dates for Final Fantasy VII Remake and Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition. The latter was just rated by the ESRB…
