Will One of the DirectX 12 Technologies Not Be Implemented on Next-Gen Consoles at First?

Neither the PlayStation 6 nor the next-generation Xbox will use DirectX 12 Work Graphs initially.

 

Although DirectX 12 Work Graphs will be part of next-gen game development, they will not be widely used on the PlayStation 6 and next-gen Xbox, particularly during the first few years of cross-gen titles. It is unclear when this will end, as cross-gen titles are still being released nearly five years after the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.

Kepler_L2, a highly trusted AMD leaker, wrote on the NeoGAF forum about the DirectX 12 Work Graphs feature that will be available for next-generation consoles. This feature will provide better performance and scalability for complex workloads, including procedural generation, particle systems, and AI logic. While the hardware and API will be ready, the engines and devices currently in use do not support this style of graphics programming, so widespread adoption is unlikely.

We’ll have to wait to see if the feature brings significant performance improvements to consoles that go far beyond what we saw on PCs shortly after its release. Otherwise, very little is known about Sony and Microsoft’s next-gen consoles, other than that they are in development. There are a few rumors about the next Xbox, but considerably more unconfirmed information about the PlayStation 6. It will reportedly come in two editions: a home console and a handheld platform. The handheld platform is speculated to be more powerful than the Xbox Series S and capable of running PlayStation 5 games natively. However, performance without developer intervention may not be great.

It will be interesting to see how Microsoft’s technology, as DirectX is tied to them, will make its way to the new hardware. Time will tell us how it will go.
