Fallout: Bakersfield: After 3 Years of Silence, the Great Concept Has Resurfaced! [VIDEO]

A partially reimagined Fallout on the GZDoom engine? Alexander Berezin (aka Red888guns) has been working on it for years.

He has released a new video of Fallout: Bakersfield, his project to recreate the ghoul city of Necropolis from Fallout 1 in the GZDoom engine. The last video was released in September 2022 and was 55 seconds long. The new four-minute trailer shows much more of Fallout: Bakersfield than ever before, giving us a better idea of the project’s scope. Berezin’s art style and proficiency in 2D Fallout immediately made the mod stand out. He previously worked on the Sonora and Olympus 2207 Fallout mods.

His YouTube and Artstation sites feature amazing mockups in the classic Fallout style extrapolated to full 3D. Berezin’s style fits perfectly with the 2.5D look of Doom. There’s even a vacuum tube monochrome green message reader for damage counts, environment tracking, and cheeky jokes. It appears that the mod will be a straightforward remake of the Fallout 1 Necropolis sequence rather than a new story set in the same location. The trailer ends with a confrontation with Super Mutant Harry, who serves as the boss of the zone in the original game.

After the trailer, a message says the mod is 60% complete and shows a split-second release date (“??/??/202?”). The last digit then ticks over. It appears that Berezin will release the mod in 2027. The long wait makes sense; Berezin is one of the developers of the New Blood Fallout-style throwback RPG and thanked New Blood boss Dave Oshry in the new Bakersfield trailer. This video is a big surprise, especially after years of not hearing much about it. However, it also shows that development is well underway, and it’s interesting to see the blending of the Fallout and DOOM styles.
