A job advertisement suggests that Sony is beginning to take the term “multiplatform” seriously. Most of its games are only available on PC and the PlayStation 5.
Although it took some time, it’s been a while since Sony decided to release virtually all of its PlayStation-exclusive games on PC. This multiplatform strategy has greatly benefited the company, and Hiroki Totoki, the CEO of Sony Group Corporation, has openly discussed his plans to further improve operating results by aggressively pursuing this strategy. However, until now, it seemed somewhat taboo for the company’s games to make their way to Xbox, with one exception: MLB The Show, the annual baseball game, began being released on Xbox in 2021, mainly due to pressure from the MLB. This was not Sony’s decision.
More interesting is the recent decision that the next Sony game to be released on Xbox will be Helldivers 2, although we’ll have to wait another month for it. Of course, it’s a live service game, so a larger player base is advantageous. As a sci-fi shooter, it’s a good fit for Xbox. This may only be the beginning, though, as Sony is looking for a senior director of multiplatform and account management.
According to the job listing, “They will play a critical leadership role in shaping and executing the global commercial strategy for PlayStation Studios software titles across all digital platforms beyond PlayStation hardware, including Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox, Nintendo, and mobile. This role is accountable for optimizing title profitability, ensuring cross-functional alignment, and leading a high-performing team focused on multiplatform expansion, mid-range commercial planning, and platform partner management.”
Perhaps Sony has finally come to the same conclusion as Microsoft. Due to ever-increasing budgets and increasingly lengthy AAA development cycles, reducing potential revenue streams no longer seems as logical as it has throughout the history of the gaming industry.
