These Trophies Shouldn’t Exist – PlayStation Gamer Calls Out the Worst Platinum Roadblock

“These types of trophies should never be allowed,” says a PlayStation user, who is exposing one of the most frustrating platinum-hunting practices. After digging into MotorStorm: Apocalypse’s trophy list, a Redditor realized that no matter how much time passes, online trophies remain a nightmare.

Trophies (or achievements, depending on your system) have always sparked debate in gaming circles. Whether it’s about their very existence—just look at Ubisoft, which is now patching in Steam achievements—or how enjoyable it is to chase them down. But a new PlayStation trophy controversy has reignited the argument, especially for platinum hunters who find themselves locked out of older games by impossible trophies from generations past.

It all started when Reddit user pockets-of-beans complained about being unable to earn the platinum in MotorStorm: Apocalypse because a bronze trophy requires an online race. While some PS3 servers are still up, most have gone offline, making these trophies unattainable. That’s not just annoying—it raises tough questions about saving progress in legacy titles and how Sony handles trophy policies.

Fans Pitch Fixes for Online-Only Trophies

The community quickly jumped in with potential solutions. User pygmeedancer suggested splitting online trophies into their category, so they don’t block platinum status. That way, players could still track total progress but wouldn’t be penalized if a trophy depended on a server that might disappear. Others, like Stars_of_Sirius, suggested hybrid solutions: make offline versions of trophies available for online achievements—something Mass Effect 3 on PS3 already does.

Some gamers go further, saying online trophies should be removed once servers go down, or never included at all. This crowd sees it as totally unfair to lock the most prestigious trophy behind a feature not accessible to everyone—whether it’s due to paywalls (like PS Plus) or just a preference for solo play. In the words of ClacksInTheSky: “Blocking platinum after online trophies is terrible, because not everyone wants or can play online.”

The whole debate brings back a bigger question: what’s the right way to design achievements and trophies? Many modern games keep their communities alive with multiplayer, but penalizing completionists with impossible trophies might be a trend worth rethinking. With online services getting more short-lived, the community hopes Sony and developers will move toward more flexible policies—so achievements stay accessible, even if the servers don’t.
