Rockstar could have a strong reason for skipping 60 FPS in Grand Theft Auto VI, all hinging on the studio’s commitment to “visual details.” According to former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij, they might prefer a locked 30 FPS to ensure richer environments and more immersive detail.
Though GTA 6’s launch is still months away, the gaming community is already teeming with speculation—not just about the story and setting, but also about what kind of technical wizardry Rockstar will bring to the table. Now, Obbe Vermeij, a former developer with deep Rockstar pedigree (he worked on GTA: San Andreas, Vice City, and GTA 3), has weighed in with an insight that could explain why GTA VI might target just 30 frames per second.
Vermeij regularly answers questions from Grand Theft Auto fans on X, drawing on his extensive experience. Addressing the challenge developers face when targeting 60 FPS, he put it simply: “It’s a trade-off. At 30 FPS you can render twice as many polygons compared to 60 FPS.”
“For a competitive action game, you’re always going to go for a high frame rate, but for GTA, you might prefer visual detail,” he concluded. It’s no secret Rockstar aims to push visual boundaries with GTA 6; the second trailer already wowed players with nuanced touches like sweat glistening on characters, lifelike beer bubbles, and plenty of nods to Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar even clarified that the trailer consisted of “equal parts gameplay and cinematics.”
Still, it’s important to note that Vermeij’s comments are only a theory. While he believes Rockstar is aiming for 30 FPS, he also concedes the studio could pull off some technical magic and still deliver 60 FPS without sacrificing detail. After all, Rockstar has stunned fans with technical marvels before—just look at Red Dead Redemption 2.
Rockstar Games Social Club Quietly Shutters
Meanwhile, Rockstar is keeping silent ahead of GTA 6’s planned May 26, 2026 release. The only news is that the studio suddenly shut down the Rockstar Games Social Club site, keeping just a few features for ongoing users. That might be a blessing in disguise: after over 13 years, the portal had accumulated plenty of issues, and Rockstar could be prepping a brand new platform for the franchise’s next chapter.
