From tiny beginnings to grand ambitions, Grounded 2 enters early access with upgraded systems, rideable bugs, and a much smarter tool setup.
Obsidian Entertainment’s quirky approach of being both small and big returns in Grounded 2, but this time the goal is to outdo the original in every way. Officially announced during the June 2025 Microsoft Summer Game Fest broadcast, the sequel entered early access just two months later on Steam and the Microsoft Store (with a Game Preview version for Xbox Series).
As one of Xbox Game Studios’ projects, the game is available through Xbox Game Pass even in its early development stage. While still clearly inspired by Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, like the first game, Grounded 2 also introduces several major improvements.
Omni-tool for the win
The biggest change is inventory management. Instead of carrying separate tools like a shovel, axe, and hammer, players now use a multifunctional omni-tool. This streamlines gameplay by removing the need to swap tools constantly – one item does it all.
Inventory is also expanded with the ability to raise an ant or spider as a personal mount and companion. This lets you carry more and travel faster across the map. While only two mounts are currently available, Grounded 2 is still in early access, and Obsidian has time to expand the roster. They’re not rushing release, so don’t expect a launch date any time soon.
Giant Red Ant Giveaway
To celebrate Grounded 2’s early access launch, Xbox and Microsoft have announced a sweepstakes for a massive red ant plush toy. The lucky winner can ride it like in the game, making for one very memorable collector’s item.
