Gujian 4: A New Name, But Still Inspired by China and the Far East! [VIDEO]

Aurogon Shanghai and Wangyuan Shangtang are collaborating on a single-player action RPG powered by Unreal Engine 5.

Swords of Legends, developed by Aurogon Shanghai, is a single-player action RPG. The living are wayfarers, while the dead are homecomers. In this world, we mourn the end that comes to all. Dead yet reborn, you take on the role of an Underworld Enforcer and embark on an adventure to guide departed souls. Swords of Legends is the official continuation of the Gujian single-player series developed by Shanghai Aurogon Studio. Building upon the foundation set by its predecessor, the game further expands the series’ universe and lore. It is a premium single-player title planned for release on PC and consoles, with no mobile version.

Swords of Legends delivers a robust main storyline with rich, cinematic storytelling, complemented by side quests and deep exploration. It is not a Soulslike nor a fully open-world game. Instead, its structure leans toward a “wide linear” design, allowing players to progress at their own pace within guided advancement. The game is set in an original fantasy world inspired by Chinese mythology and mystical folklore. This time, the Gujian universe expands by placing players in the role of an Underworld Enforcer—a unique figure who traverses between the realms of the living and the dead. Familiar figures such as the Ox-Head and Horse-Face guardians, glimpsed in the trailer, will accompany players on their journey.

But this is more than a retelling of myths. Players will guide lost souls, helping them resolve lingering regrets. Each soul carries a deeply personal backstory. In the trailer, one such soul—a woman dancing before bronze bells—was shown, unwilling to let go of her ties to the mortal world and ready to pay any price to remain.

The developers are not aiming for punishing difficulty or skill-based combat alone. Instead, soul capturing serves as both a narrative device and a combat mechanic. Players can capture certain monster souls and summon them to aid in battles. Some can even perform cooperative combo attacks, like the special drop strike shown in the trailer alongside Ox-Head and Horse-Face. Exploration rewards players with useful items, while flexible weapon and skill loadouts allow adaptation to different enemy types. The goal is to create an RPG where all players can enjoy the satisfying path of becoming stronger.

Back in 2021, the developers were in the early stages of initiating the project and conducting research. They set high standards for quality, and after exploring technical approaches, they chose Unreal Engine 5—an ambitious decision with significant budget demands at the time. Alongside learning the engine, they engaged in early research and planning. By early 2024, they secured funding that allowed the Swords of Legends team to expand gradually. Since then, the game has been in full production for about two years. They have now entered the mass development stage, presenting their progress with the first trailer.

Swords of Legends is in development for consoles and PC, with no release date announced yet.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
