True to tradition, Chinese developer Game Science unveiled new news on August 20 — this time pulling back the curtain on the next entry in the Black Myth saga.
“Hunting the ghosts outside is easy. But those within burn deep to fight.” With these words, Game Science signaled the dawn of a new chapter. The studio has long made a point of updating players every August 20, and 2025 was no different. Yet the project is still little more than an empty folder, leaving them with almost no gameplay to show. To keep focus on development, they instead dropped a short CGI teaser confirming the game’s launch in earnest.
Thanks to steadfast support from fans, the first Black Myth game launched successfully. With the Destined One’s journey concluded, the developers now hope to take cautious but ambitious first steps: aiming for bolder gameplay features, distinctive experiences, and fresh ideas for world-building and storytelling alike.
Zhong Kui emerged as the natural choice from this ambition. Game Science believes the project will bring meaningful innovation while also learning from the flaws and regrets of the past. For players who adored Black Myth: Wukong, the message is clear: the Westward Journey doesn’t end here. Black Myth: Zhong Kui is still rooted in ancient Chinese mythology and folklore. It will remain a single-player ARPG, following the same business model as before. This time, though, players won’t be taking control of a monkey — though the team is still experimenting with how Wukong and Zhong Kui will differ in practice.
The developers say they are eager to tell new stories, bring new gameplay features, and ensure longtime Wukong players feel both at home and surprised in the best way possible. As for target platforms, details remain scarce: officially, the title is bound for PC and all mainstream consoles. But the big question remains — will the Xbox Series once again be left out, just as it was with Black Myth: Wukong?
