Planescape: Torment Is Getting a Massive Fan Expansion After 26 Years!

For the first time in 26 years, three devoted RPG fans are creating a huge expansion for the legendary Planescape: Torment. Called Blizzard in Baator, the project will have a demo available in 2025.

The words “legendary” and “classic” perfectly describe Planescape: Torment. The RPG developed by Black Isle Studios under the guidance of Chris Avellone (lead designer of Fallout: New Vegas) celebrates its 26th anniversary this December, and it’s experiencing a revival thanks to its fans. Three passionate gamers have taken it upon themselves to expand the original story with new characters, locations, and quests, resulting in a massive fan expansion that will have a demo later this year.

Entitled Blizzard in Baator, the expansion will continue to explore the mysteries of the Nameless One and his enigmatic identity. The story takes players from the city of Sigil into the depths of the Nine Hells, including the frozen wastelands of Cania, plunging them into the political intrigue and cold war between the Lords of the Nine Hells. This promises danger, exploration, and a complex plot that remains true to the essence of the original game.

The project is handcrafted: just three creators — Boss, FallDamage312, and Wrathu — have been working on it for nearly two years. Their commitment is such that, beyond the story and characters, Blizzard in Baator will also include an entirely original soundtrack, composed from scratch, rather than reusing the melodies of the base game.

The demo won’t be a small teaser: it will feature over 20 locations and about 100 characters, complete with custom cinematics. While it focuses on the first act, the developers plan to expand it with recruitable characters and additional content as the next acts are developed.

The Full Blizzard in Baator Expansion Will Take Years

Still, fans should temper their expectations. According to the team, the complete Blizzard in Baator might not be ready until 2031, coinciding with the 32nd anniversary of Planescape: Torment. The developers are optimistic that they’ll finish earlier if everything goes smoothly. Regardless, this expansion demonstrates how Planescape: Torment continues to stand as a benchmark in RPG storytelling and design, even decades after its release.
