The Coalition and Microsoft have reason to celebrate, as Marcus Fenix and his crew are in high demand.
Gears of War: Reloaded launched on August 26, and while you might assume a series like this would stick to Xbox and PC, that’s not the case—this time the IP also landed on PlayStation 5, turning another of Microsoft’s classic gems into a multiplatform release. Within its first week, The Coalition and Microsoft announced that the game had already surpassed one million players. As the studio posted on X: “Ending the console war, one grub at a time. Thank you for 1 million players.”

It’s a major milestone for the remaster—the second one, if you count the earlier Ultimate Edition—even if one million players isn’t the same as sales, since a sizable chunk likely jumped in via Xbox Game Pass. Still, August 26 marked a noteworthy moment for the industry: Microsoft and Sony each brought a previously exclusive title to the other’s platform. From Sony’s side, Arrowhead’s Helldivers II arrived on Xbox Series (and we recently covered the live-service game’s update slated for next week).
We also looked at how Gears of War: Reloaded performs this week. Consoles deliver a solid 60 FPS mode, but if you’re chasing 120 FPS, the PlayStation 5 Pro is—ironically—the best bet right now. And the franchise isn’t stopping here: a prequel, Gears of War E-Day, is in the works, though we’ll have to wait a bit longer for its release.
The broader takeaway is clear: strict exclusivity doesn’t carry the weight it once did—though Nintendo still clings to it with tooth and nail.
