Realism in Vietnam without the constant stress of Tarkov. A shooter with a remarkable Steam rating that is carving out its own place in the genre. Incursion Red River is available now in Early Access on Steam — and what sets it apart is how different it feels from its competitors.
There are plenty of extraction shooters on the market or set to launch soon, but one title seems to have flown under the radar and could end up surprising everyone. That title is Incursion Red River, developed by Games of Tomorrow, which entered Early Access on Steam in 2024. During its showing at Gamescom 2025, it drew considerable attention, proving one thing beyond doubt: it’s an extraction shooter, but without the stress that usually comes with the genre.
According to colleagues at JeuxVideo, who tested the game in its most advanced form at the German expo, Incursion Red River sets itself apart from giants like Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown. Its major twist: no PvP mode. Instead, players progress solo or in squads of up to four, battling only AI-controlled enemies. This removes the anxiety of fighting human opponents while preserving the intensity of each mission.
The game currently features two maps: a vast jungle region and a maze-like underground bunker. Missions focus on infiltration, looting, and extraction, supported by a reputation-based progression system with multiple factions. This allows players to unlock new weapons, ammo types, and upgrades as they advance.
Accessible but Still Realistic
What rounds out the experience is the remarkable realism: inventory and maps are managed on an in-game tablet, ammo must be checked manually, and combat details like recoil, smooth animations, and the reward of precision all recreate the tactical feel of high-stakes shooters. One well-aimed shot can kill an enemy — or the player — adding strategic weight to every encounter.
Some have already dubbed it the “perfect alternative” to traditional extraction shooters, a true competitor to Escape from Tarkov and others. GameStar emphasized how challenging AI opponents can be, rivaling human players and forcing careful planning and tactics, while keeping the experience fair and not frustrating.
Though still in Early Access, the game has been well received, currently holding a 75% positive rating on Steam. Developers are planning even more content: four new maps in the coming years, a broader arsenal of weapons, and mod support. With these additions, Incursion Red River could establish itself as one of the most appealing choices in its genre.
