UltiZero Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment spent years developing the game, which was finally released last week with a demo. Technically, however, it can hardly be called impressive.
Lost Soul Aside is far from the most advanced-looking title of the current console generation. Even so, it has to run at a very low resolution to maintain 60 FPS gameplay on a standard PlayStation 5. This was revealed in the video below, created by ElAnalistaDeBits, who compared the PlayStation 5 Pro to the PC version and confirmed the resolution and frame rate targets for both console versions.
While the visual differences between the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro versions are minimal, the Performance Mode resolution ranges are striking: On the PlayStation 5 Pro it runs between 1398p and 1080p, while on the base PlayStation 5 it ranges between 1189p and 635p. 635p is shockingly low, even for a game with relatively outdated graphics! That’s not even HD resolution! (720p would be required for that.) Performance, however, appears mostly stable, with none of the stuttering issues seen in the PC version.
Lost Soul Aside had a long development cycle, evolving from a solo project into a much larger production. Unfortunately, it failed to meet player expectations in terms of graphics and narrative. It’s a shame that the game launched in such a poor technical state (with sound balance issues — at times too quiet, at others deafening!) and at a price that feels too high for the content it offers. Beneath these glaring flaws, though, lies a fundamentally solid action game with a great combat system that allows for creative player expression.
Lost Soul Aside is now available on PlayStation 5 and PC. The question remains whether an Xbox Series port will follow. (We’re not expecting a Nintendo Switch 2 version.) In theory, that should be part of a proper multiplatform strategy.
