NeoBards Entertainment may have solved a common problem with games using Unreal Engine 5.
In the video below, Digital Foundry editors revealed that the PC and PlayStation 5 versions of Silent Hill f, shown behind closed doors at Gamescom, demonstrated that Epic Games’ technology can deliver clean image quality and stable performance without stuttering. The game’s performance is especially impressive for one running on UE5, hitting a stable 60 FPS on a base PlayStation 5 and PC. While not native 4K, certain scenes were capped at 30 FPS, but still looked excellent thanks to effective use of motion blur.
Even better, there was none of the stuttering often seen in Unreal Engine 5 titles. This is promising. According to Digital Foundry, the game was so clean it lacked the temporal noise common in other games and ran so well it was almost hard to tell it was powered by UE5. A closer inspection, however, revealed the use of Lumen software, which in most cases provided excellent lighting.
It’s exciting to hear about the technical advances of Silent Hill f, as it is the first entirely new entry in the series since Konami rebooted the franchise. It also looks to be the most unique installment yet, featuring mechanics such as dodging and stamina bars. While many assumed these were inspired by FromSoftware’s Souls titles, producer Motoi Okamoto clarified that similar systems appeared in earlier Silent Hill games in different forms.
We won’t have to wait much longer: Silent Hill f launches September 25 on PlayStation 5 and PC.
