NetEase’s successful third-person hero shooter might not remain exclusive to Sony’s previous-generation console. While the PlayStation 4 release surprised many, speculation is growing that the Nintendo Switch 2 could also be part of the plan.
The announcement of a PS4 version came as a shock (we reported on it earlier), since even though more PS4s have been sold than PS5s, the question remains: are more players still active on PS4 than PS5 today? With the PlayStation 5 turning five years old this fall, focusing on older hardware feels like a bold move. Performance will also be key — if the game struggles technically, players won’t stick around to play as Marvel’s superheroes on PS4.
Meanwhile, rumors suggest a Nintendo Direct will take place next week. Marvel Rivals has been a success, and demand for the Nintendo Switch 2 is similarly high. What would stop NetEase from bringing the game to Nintendo’s newest console? When it launched last December on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC, the game clearly took the wind out of Overwatch 2’s sails. One possible obstacle is Nintendo’s reluctance to share devkits with outside studios. However, given how popular Marvel Rivals has become, the Japanese company may now see value in opening that door for NetEase.
Looking at it from another angle, if the rumored Nintendo Direct really is happening, Nintendo will have to address it soon. So what’s to stop NetEase from shadow-dropping Marvel Rivals on the Switch 2? Several titles have previously appeared on the eShop during such events without prior notice. This game would fit that strategy perfectly: a popular title receiving a fresh port on new hardware. And let’s not forget, the Switch 2 has only been on the market for three months.
Hopefully, we’ll hear more concrete news in the coming days.
