A fresh comparison shows how Konami’s pachislot version stacks up against the modern remake of this legendary title.
While Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is undoubtedly the most visually impressive edition of Hideo Kojima’s iconic third entry, the pachislot version released a few years ago holds up surprisingly well. In some areas, it even outshines Virtuos’ Unreal Engine 5 remake. This is clearly demonstrated in the two videos created by Cycu1.
The clips place the remake side by side with Bluepoint’s HD edition (re-released two years ago as part of the Master Collection Vol. 1 for PC and consoles), alongside the pachislot recreation of the same iconic scenes. The pachislot footage looks better than one might expect, occasionally surpassing the Unreal Engine 5 remake in aspects such as lighting — although this isn’t surprising given that the pachislot cutscenes aren’t rendered in real time.
Despite the PC version’s 60 FPS cap and other technical issues (which mods can alleviate, though only on PC), Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater has been a massive success, selling one million copies on its first day, as confirmed by Konami last week. The commercial performance was no shock, given this is the first major release in the franchise for years. The adjustments to the original experience enhance the game significantly without undermining what made Snake Eater one of the best — if not the best — entries in the series.
That said, some fans might have preferred starting with the original Metal Gear Solid, which debuted on PlayStation 1 and received a GameCube remake in 2004 subtitled Twin Snakes. However, from a story chronology perspective, MGS3 comes first.
