Even if Insomniac Games won’t complete its Spider-Man DLC, at least fans can hear snippets tied to the scrapped expansion.
Insomniac faced major leaks in 2023, most of which stemmed from a ransomware attack at the end of the year. That breach revealed sensitive information, including claims that Green Goblin would serve as the villain of Marvel’s Spider-Man 3. A later issue emerged when an update accidentally exposed a hidden developer menu to players, pointing strongly toward Beetle being central to a canceled Spider-Man 2 DLC.
Concept art of Beetle leaked on Twitter last year, corroborating what had already surfaced in the earlier file dump. This updated design honored previous incarnations with its insect-like wings while modernizing the look with a sleek blend of purple and bluish-green tones. Packed with intricate detailing, the suit’s wings appeared to be constructed from futuristic materials. Insomniac has long been praised for crafting memorable villains, and Beetle looked poised to continue that streak.
The hidden menu leak also suggested that Beetle would be Janice Lincoln, the daughter of Tombstone. This matches the comics, where Janice is the most recent character to adopt the Beetle mantle. Earlier leaks indicated Insomniac’s roadmap included Venom, Wolverine, Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, Ratchet & Clank, and X-Men, with release windows spanning 2025 through 2030 in that order. The studio had also once worked on a now-canceled multiplayer Spider-Man title.
More recently, Reddit users unearthed audio files tied to the Beetle DLC. Reports claim the project was canceled, with Insomniac now said to be working on Venom—though some speculate Marvel’s Wolverine is the true focus. The bigger question: Was that ambitious 2025–2030 rollout plan realistic in the first place?
