While one of Acclaim’s returning games channels the SSX vibe (as we reported a few days ago), here’s a look at what could have been if the SSX legacy had carried on.
In the 2000s, SSX stood at the top of snowboarding simulation games. Electronic Arts delivered high-quality gameplay and stylish characters that fans loved. But since the 2012 reboot, the franchise has been left dormant. The original SSX creatives teamed up with 2K (Take-Two) on a spiritual successor, Project Gravity, which ended up being canceled in 2024. Now, newly revealed concept art gives us a glimpse of what might have been.
Former team member Gordon Wang posted a collection of concept art on ArtStation, showcasing tracks and environments that could have come straight out of SSX. Both in-engine screenshots and detailed illustrations are included, giving fans a sense of how the game might have looked and played. There are plenty of artworks available on ArtStation—picking just five wasn’t easy! Given that much of the original SSX team worked on Project Gravity, it’s no surprise the designs evoke so much nostalgia.
Kotaku reported on the game’s cancellation last year, though the public had never even heard of it before, since it was never officially announced. Project Gravity would have reunited the SSX crew, including co-creators Steve Rechtschaffner and Larry LaPierre. For many, SSX’s formula remains unmatched, although titles like Steep helped soften the blow somewhat.
Although Project Gravity will never see the light of day—perhaps Take-Two feared it wouldn’t become a blockbuster?—SuperNatural Studios still exists, meaning there’s always a chance another version could surface. Until then, snowboard fans may want to keep an eye on HyperYuki: Snowboard Syndicate, which clearly takes inspiration from SSX’s style.
