Conan O’Brien tried Gearbox’s newest game, but no one told him that a certain Borderlands 4 character could be muted.
Before the release of Borderlands 4 last week, Conan O’Brien returned with a new episode of Clueless Gamer to play the game in support of the nonprofit Next for Autism. While O’Brien is not widely known in Hungary, he is a U.S. talk show host, somewhat comparable to Sándor Fábry or, earlier, Sándor Friderikusz in concept.
At the start of the video, O’Brien’s eyes glazed over while listening to the game’s backstory. He joked that they should just tell people the characters are robots who shoot each other. After watching the opening, which he compared to a Russian novel, he encountered the infamous Claptrap and immediately joined the ranks of players who despise the hyperactive little rolling box. He joked that the best part about Claptrap is that he will never be annoying, then imitated his voice, adding that Claptrap is his “least favorite trash can,” which says a lot.
In Borderlands 4, O’Brien could have muted Claptrap with a new sound menu option (a clever feature from Gearbox), but for the sake of entertainment, he endured it. He then fought Kratches and faced a life-or-death struggle in the Lambent Mines. The game eventually crashed after his co-host, Aaron Bleyaert, tried adjusting a setting to make things easier. O’Brien later spent several minutes figuring out how to bypass a force field—including simply shooting at it—before attempting to defeat the boss, Vile Lictor.
He managed to defeat the unfortunately named honcho and closed the show by once again highlighting Next for Autism, an organization that develops and runs programs to support people with autism. It was a meaningful initiative that added weight to the comedic gameplay session.
