MOVIE NEWS – The first official trailer might not have been what many fans expected, but three beloved Star Wars creatures make it unforgettable. Instead of showing the longer, flashier version seen at last year’s Celebration, Disney and Lucasfilm released a shorter and more family-friendly teaser. Still, the cameos make the preview special for longtime followers of the saga.
The first official trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu wasn’t exactly the teaser I had hoped for. I was expecting Disney and Lucasfilm to drop the same cut shown at last year’s Star Wars Celebration: longer, less childish, and packed with spectacular action. On first watch, it left me feeling cold… like carbonite. But three familiar faces for die-hard Star Wars fans make it worthwhile—not new characters or flashy effects, but aliens that stole my heart since I first discovered that galaxy far, far away.
Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios: the Lasat hero from Star Wars Rebels
One of the rarest faces since the animated series Star Wars Rebels is Garazeb Orrelios, or Zeb. The former captain of the Lasan High Honor Guard and a member of the Spectres with Hera Syndulla and Kanan Jarrus always brought muscle and humor. Towering at 7’1”, with his purple skin and trusty bo-rifle, Zeb survived the genocide of his homeworld by the Empire and became a symbol of resistance. In the trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu, Zeb briefly appears wielding his weapon in spear mode, a direct nod to those who cherish the Rebels era. His cameo was already teased in The Mandalorian, foreshadowing his role in the New Republic timeline.
Amanaman: the bounty hunter of Maridun
Another exciting return is Amanaman, a bounty hunter of the Amani species from Maridun. This mercenary carved his niche among hardcore fans thanks to his blink-and-you-miss-it cameo in Jabba’s palace in Return of the Jedi. His yellow-green skin, red eyes, and skull-adorned spear made him one of the strangest denizens of Tatooine—and a fan favorite for kids of the 1980s. In the trailer, he surfaces from dark waters for just a moment, but for me, it felt like the warm (and wet) hug of a long-lost friend. As a kid, I could never find his Kenner figure, even though I adored the design. Decades later, I finally stumbled across it at a flea market, turning Amanaman into one of my most nostalgic collectibles.
Mantellian Savrips: from Dejarik to the screen
Then there are the Mantellian Savrips, giant reptilian beasts from Ord Mantell, first seen as Dejarik holographic chess pieces aboard the Millennium Falcon. Their brutal, primitive look perfectly embodies gladiatorial combat. Fun fact: they’re the only Dejarik piece that wears clothing. Legend has it they were meant to appear in the Mos Eisley cantina, but George Lucas’s budget restrictions left them relegated to a hologram cameo. I also remember them as bosses in the Super NES game Super Star Wars, which cemented their place among my favorite monsters. Their quick shot in the trailer is a reminder that Star Wars thrives not just on heroes, but also on its menagerie of creatures—with or without wardrobes. Right, Chewie?
A celebration of secondary characters
With Zeb, Amanaman, and the Savrips, the trailer pays tribute to the secondary figures that make the Star Wars universe feel alive. They don’t need the spotlight to enrich the galaxy; their very presence enhances its authenticity. It’s worth noting that the Amanaman and Savrips here may not be the exact individuals we know, but rather members of their species—just like Greedo wasn’t the only Rodian. Still, it’s a clever nod for dedicated fans.
As we await the May 22, 2026 premiere of The Mandalorian & Grogu, remember that you can still stream all the adventures of Din Djarin and Grogu, along with the entire Star Wars saga, on Disney+—assuming you haven’t canceled over the Jimmy Kimmel show censorship controversy.
