If you’ve been dreaming of turning The Witcher 3 into an endlessly evolving RPG on consoles, CD Projekt has some bad news — cross-platform mod support, meant to bring the full range of PC mods to PS5 and Xbox Series, has been pushed back to 2026.
Plans have shifted for The Witcher 3’s future. CD Projekt RED has officially confirmed that the long-awaited cross-platform mod system — originally intended to allow PC-created mods to run on PS5 and Xbox Series — will need significantly more time to complete. When first announced, the Cyberpunk 2077 studio expected the feature to launch sometime in 2025 as part of Geralt of Rivia’s adventure. Now, however, the studio has admitted the rollout won’t happen until several months later.
In a post on the official The Witcher account on X, developers revealed that console mod compatibility is now scheduled for an unspecified point in 2026. The team also clarified that several technical aspects still need to be finalized, promising more concrete details as the feature’s release window approaches.
How Cross-Platform Mod Support Will Work
If you’re hearing about this feature for the first time, here’s how it works: the goal is to unify the modding community across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series into one shared ecosystem. It will be powered by mod.io — a platform built to distribute community-created content and modifications across multiple platforms — and will allow console players to experience the same fan-made expansions, visual overhauls, and gameplay tweaks that have made the PC version of The Witcher 3 so enduring.
One important caveat remains: mod creation will still require a PC. As CD Projekt RED reiterated, all mods must be built using tools like the REDkit modding suite. Even so, this new system represents a huge leap forward for console players, who will finally gain access to the enormous library of PC mods — a feature that, as of now, won’t become a reality until 2026.
