The team behind Frontier Hunter: Erza’s Wheel, IceSitruuna, is clearly fed up with Square Enix letting one of its most beloved franchises gather dust — so they decided to create their own successor in the form of a survival horror RPG heavily inspired by Parasite Eve.

Parasite Mutant is a science fiction survival horror RPG set in a distant future, where Nova, a psionic agent, is sent to an abandoned island city crawling with grotesque, mutated creatures. What happens there will forever change her destiny. The game uses an ATC (Active Time Chains) system that blends the classic Active Time Battle mechanics of late-’90s RPGs with a three-segment chain structure. Players must carefully time their actions within each segment, deciding whether to conserve energy or unleash powerful combo attacks. Once the gauge is full, evading enemy strikes and responding with perfectly timed attacks is crucial.

The game adopts a semi-realistic anime art style, enhanced with modern rendering techniques for a crisp HD presentation. To capture the nostalgic feel of classic JRPGs, Parasite Mutant also includes retro visual filters and CRT effects, recreating the atmosphere of late ’90s and early 2000s titles. Players will face terrifying mutant foes, solve puzzles to uncover the truth, and perhaps even reveal the sinister secret at the heart of this universe.

A modern tribute to a cult classic

Parasite Mutant features a classic equipment progression system, allowing players to attach modules to their gear or enhance it using Plus Points earned in combat. A New Game+ mode lets players carry over their accumulated points to a fresh playthrough, unlocking new areas that present tougher challenges and opportunities for growth. Additionally, the game offers an outfit customization system for deeper personalization.

The developers are open about their inspiration: “Parasite Mutant is clearly inspired by Parasite Eve, a series that Square Enix seems to have abandoned — so we decided to carry that legacy forward ourselves.”

Parasite Mutant is slated for release in 2026 on PlayStation 5 and PC.
