PlayStation 5 Pro: Capable of Path Tracing, Claims Gaijin!

Gaijin Entertainment, the studio behind War Thunder and Enlisted, believes that Sony’s mid-generation console upgrade is capable of supporting this modern visual technology.

WCCFTech asked the programmers of War Thunder and the Dagor Engine whether the PlayStation 5 Pro would support the new path-traced global illumination technology recently introduced on PC with the game’s Leviathan update. Lead programmer László Perneky replied: “Technically, it could. The only question is performance. It is a decision for the future, though. First, we are focusing on releasing ray tracing support for consoles with all the effects except PTGI, which we hope to do very soon. Then, we will have a better idea of how much of the GPU budget is available for PTGI and whether we can modify it to fit that budget.”

About a year ago, Mark Cerny, the lead system architect for the PlayStation 5 Pro, was asked a similar question and responded rather cautiously: “One difficulty in answering your question is that there are so many strategies for doing ray tracing or path tracing. For example, the engine that drives Alan Wake 2 is very different from the engine that drives Cyberpunk 2077. I hesitate to say whether the PlayStation 5 Pro can do path tracing, but if it’s going to be done, it needs a highly optimized strategy.”

To date, no game has implemented path tracing on the PlayStation 5 Pro. War Thunder may be the console’s best chance to achieve this because it uses PTGI rather than full path tracing. However, console gamers will likely have to wait until the PlayStation 6 for proper path tracing support.

Regarding the porting of War Thunder and/or Enlisted to the Nintendo Switch 2, Anton Yudintsev, CEO of Gaijin, said that they are always happy to be among the first to support new devices. They are considering making Switch 2 versions of the games, but are still waiting for the requested Switch 2 dev kits.

If a major developer like Gaijin is still waiting for Switch 2 development kits, it seems that Nintendo is intent on preventing a flood of subpar games from appearing on the Nintendo eShop.
