Dean Hall — the creator of DayZ — is back in the spotlight: ICARUS, the punishing survival game that launched on PC in 2021, is headed to consoles in 2026 with every piece of content released so far.
It’s been a long time since DayZ, but the former New Zealand serviceman never left games as a creative medium. After leaving Bohemia Interactive, he worked on a canceled project and then on Kitten Space Agency, inspired by Kerbal Space Program. His military bent never faded, and in 2021, he launched ICARUS, an open-world blend of exploration, survival, and action that is finally spreading its wings and coming to consoles.
Originally released on Steam in December 2021, ICARUS delivers an intense loop where every drop is a constant fight against the elements. Players land on a terraformed planet that failed to become humanity’s next home — now a hostile space of storms, wildlife, and toxic air — where building shelters, crafting weapons, and harvesting resources are the keys to survival.
New Frontiers Included at Launch
The console edition includes the New Frontiers expansion from day one, significantly broadening the base game. You’ll explore two 64 km² maps with diverse biomes — forests, mountains, deserts, and cave networks — face new mutated creatures, and tackle narrative missions set in the Prometheus region. 100+ new items, exotic materials, and resources further expand building and combat options.
One of ICARUS’ signatures is its volatility: the planet isn’t a backdrop but an active enemy. Wildfires, lightning, severe storms, and extreme weather can radically alter any run. A deep progression tree lets you specialize as a hunter, builder, or survivalist, while the Orbital Workshop offers permanent upgrades in exchange for the riskiest, most valuable exotics.
Icarus: Console Edition won’t feature cross-play, but it will support co-op for up to four players, with both free-roam and mission-based modes. Targeting a 2026 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, RocketWerkz’s ambitious project is hunting for a new audience.
