It is not surprising, but a new interview makes it explicit: Marvel and Sony’s Insomniac Games are in this for the long haul – and the studio is poised to build more licensed Marvel titles in the coming years.
Marvel (Disney) and Insomniac Games have long enjoyed a strong relationship. Without that closeness, we wouldn’t have three Marvel’s Spider-Man entries or the in-development Marvel’s Wolverine. Speaking to Game Informer, Marvel leadership outlined why the partnership works so well and why a shared creative approach matters.
“The challenge is more complex. Authenticity doesn’t necessarily mean one-to-one fidelity to source material – whether comics, animation, or film. It goes deeper, because we empower our partners to reimagine ‘familiar yet original’ incarnations of our characters through their own creative DNA. We absolutely do not want to be derivative – otherwise, what’s the point of working with the best talent? We feel a great responsibility: Marvel is a nearly 90-year-old creative brand and still fresh, because every generation grows up with Marvel, becomes creators, leaves a mark, then passes the torch.” said Haluk Mentes, Managing Director at Marvel Games.
“We actively look for teams who want to carry that mantle. Typically, once we finish a project together, they become ‘Marvel’ too. Marvel’s Wolverine, made with our friends at Insomniac, perhaps best embodies this philosophy. We’ve collaborated for over a decade and developed a shorthand across multiple Marvel’s Spider-Man games. When it came time to bring Logan back in a spectacular, visceral way, everyone agreed Insomniac was the perfect choice. Our shared culture and values brought us together, and we’re proud to keep collaborating for many years.”
Given the ransomware leaks nearly two years ago, it has long been likely that multiple Marvel projects are in the pipeline – so future titles featuring Venom or even the X-Men would hardly be a surprise.
