Steam Controller: Will the New Model Detect How Far Away Our Hands Are from It?

TECH NEWS – Valve is reportedly giving the controller another try. Since the company last did so a decade ago, a lot has changed.

After years of waiting, it seems that Valve is finally ready to release the next version of the Steam Controller. According to reports, Valve will release the new controller alongside the upcoming Steam Frame, codenamed Fremont. The Fremont is expected to be a significant improvement over the original model, which Valve discontinued in 2015. Previous leaks have revealed what the new controller will look like, and Valve has made references to it in Steam updates. Based on the available information, the new controller appears to include all the features of the Steam Deck, including motion control, but on a separate pad.

According to renowned Valve leaker SadlyItsBradley, the Steam Controller 2 will be called the Steam Controller, like its predecessor, which is no longer available. Bradley believes that Valve is very close to launching the device. According to rumors, the announcement will come at the end of the month, alongside the upcoming console. The reliable leaker claims that the image below is an AI-generated clone of a real image created to conceal identifiable details of the original source. One of the most interesting features of the new controller is a function not found in the Steam Deck. The insider says that the device will be able to detect how far our hands are from the handles with a simple capacitive sensing function, similar to Valve’s Index controller for VR.

Although the leaker did not explain how this feature will help players, he suggested that players will be able to customize it to enable or disable motion controls with a squeeze or similar gesture. This feature could also serve as an accessibility tool for players with less dexterity. In addition to the new Steam Frame console, Valve is reportedly developing a new VR headset codenamed “Valve Deckard.” The headset is rumored to be released in late 2025, with the complete package costing around $1,200. In early October, SadlyItsBradley discovered several drivers for the Deckard DV1 and Deckard DV1 developer units in SteamVR beta updates, so Valve may soon announce its new hardware package, which will include the Steam Controller.

Unfortunately for Steam Deck fans, there is no news about a new model. Valve has confirmed that there will be no minor updates. Instead, the company will wait until there is a significant performance improvement before releasing a new model.
