According to one of the co-founders of the currently busy studio, a sequel is in the works, just not the one we might initially expect.
While Obsidian Entertainment is reportedly working on a sequel to Avowed, the studio has not yet given the green light to a third The Outer Worlds game. This information comes from Obsidian’s former co-founder, Chris Avellone. According to his tweet, apart from plans for The Outer Worlds 2 DLC, Obsidian is not planning a third installment of the franchise but is planning Avowed 2. It’s worth noting that Avellone left the studio ten years ago after having some famous disagreements with CEO Feargus Urquhart. However, Avellone, who recently joined Republic Games to work on an upcoming dark fantasy RPG, may still have some connections at Obsidian.
Apparently, aside from DLC plans for Outer Worlds 2, it seems like Obsidian is making no plans for Outer Worlds 3 (but they are doing Avowed 2).

Avowed was released on February 18, kicking off a busy year for Obsidian, which also includes Grounded 2, currently in early access. The game takes place in the fantasy world of Eora, which was originally introduced to fans of the studio in the cRPG series Pillars of Eternity. The Outer Worlds 2 is another excellent RPG from Obsidian and an improvement on the original. However, Avowed may be even better due to its improved, challenging combat and more interesting companions.
However, if it’s true that the studio isn’t planning to make more games in The Outer Worlds IP, this could open up space for something else. This could be either a third, bigger-budget Pillars of Eternity game, which Josh Sawyer would love to make, or the game that many fans would like to see: Fallout: New Vegas 2. A few years ago, Urquhart left the door open to this possibility. While Bethesda seems unenthusiastic, Microsoft is reportedly eager to release new Fallout games following the success of the Amazon TV series. With BGS still working on The Elder Scrolls VI, one way to achieve this would be to entrust the task to a sister studio.
