Microsoft is clearly trying to minimize development costs so management can earn higher year-end bonuses.
Players have noticed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 contains numerous AI-generated assets used for in-game rewards. Activision has used generative AI in this way before, sparking fierce backlash from players. The company did the same with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 last year and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 two years ago. A tweet shows an image of in-game calling card rewards, all of which contain AI-generated assets. Activision also used AI-generated elements in the campaign and in the prestige icons that players fought for hours to obtain. There are likely more AI-generated assets in the game that players will discover over time.

Responses to the tweet quickly reveal players’ feelings about the game being full of these AI-generated assets, even if they only make up a small part of the game. The game’s Steam page provides another perspective, with several players criticizing the use of AI alongside other issues with the game. For example, the game requires a constant internet connection, even when playing offline, and the campaign cannot be paused. If you go AFK, you are kicked out of the game and forced to start over. At a certain point, you have to consider what you’re actually paying for. Cosmetic changes to our character and profile are worthwhile for players and generate good microtransactions because artists have carefully crafted them to look good.
This may be a minor aspect of the game, but it demonstrates Activision’s disregard for detail. Even if the Microsoft-owned publisher replaces these assets with real, human-made graphics, there’s no reason to expect a different outcome next year, which will likely be even more glaring.
