After more than eight years, we are finally approaching the release of the new Metroid Prime game!
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond begins with an attack on the Galactic Federation UTO Research Center by Samus’s archenemy, Sylux. Samus answers the distress call and soon becomes entangled in an unexpected disaster. After awakening on the unknown planet Viewros, she must fight to survive and escape. Viewros is home to ferocious beasts and diverse locales, including lush jungles, a stormy factory, an icy research lab, and a volcanic facility. These areas are connected by a central desert called Sol Valley.
Use tools like the Scan Visor and Samus’s core abilities, such as the Power Beam, Missiles, and the form-altering Morph Ball, to gather information, fight, access new areas, and find a way forward. Samus will also receive mysterious psychic abilities that enable her to manipulate energy, activate machinery, and more. Freely traverse the roadless desert of Sol Valley on Vi-O-La, a vehicle left behind by an ancient civilization. Use Vi-O-La to counter attacks from approaching enemies and to smash crystals at high speed and convert them into the energy you’ll need on your adventure. Depending on her location, Samus can also instantly summon and ride Vi-O-La.
The latest overview trailer provides significant insight into the gameplay. It showcases several key systems and introduces the main mechanics players will interact with during Samus’s latest adventure. The trailer also details the Galactic Federation soldiers who send out a distress signal at the beginning of the game. Samus responds to the signal, which leads her to the planet Viewros. These allies appear to accompany Samus for most of the game, which is a definite departure from the classic Metroid style of Samus adventuring alone.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is set to release on December 4 for the Nintendo Switch 2 and original Nintendo Switch. Retro Studios did not originally develop the game, but regained the rights to the project after the reboot (this team also developed the first three installments).
