The Cult War Strategy Game That Is Finally Marching Onto Mobile

Very few strategy games can boast about still having outstanding Steam ratings, more than one hundred hours of content and a loyal fanbase fifteen years after launch. Now this veteran is getting a second life: on December 2, Creative Assembly’s classic Total War: NAPOLEON is marching onto iOS and Android, ready to let you command empires from the comfort of your phone.

European military history has inspired some of the finest strategy games ever made. Given how often humanity has gone to war, there is no shortage of material for games, films, novels, or reimagined stories, but few periods fascinate players as much as the rise of a French general who would go on to bend much of the continent to his will. That same fascination led The Creative Assembly to give Napoleon his own entry in the Total War series, and now, fifteen years after the original PC release, Total War: NAPOLEON is preparing to leave the desktop and make the jump to mobile devices.

The British studio’s decision does not come out of nowhere. Previous mobile adaptations of the saga on iOS and Android have been warmly received. Following in the footsteps of Medieval II: Total War and Empire: Total War and their smartphone versions, the spin-off of the latter will now arrive on phones and tablets on December 2.

Total War: NAPOLEON On Mobile Comes With A Formerly Paid DLC Included

As its name indicates, Total War: NAPOLEON lets players relive the Napoleonic Wars, though you are not forced to play as Napoleon himself. Instead, you can take command of any of the great powers involved in the conflict and face the European coalitions that fought to shape the continent’s destiny. The main campaign, known as the Coalition Campaigns, offers the chance to revisit – or rewrite – some of the era’s decisive clashes, from the triumph at Austerlitz to the French emperor’s final defeat at Waterloo.

Unlike Empire: Total War, this Napoleonic installment will not add exclusive campaigns in its mobile release. As confirmed by Feral Interactive, which handles the license outside PC, the mobile version will be essentially identical to the original, with one important exception: it will include the Peninsular Campaign, an add-on that was sold separately on PC but is now bundled for free. In this scenario, players take part in the defense or liberation of the Iberian Peninsula, fighting key battles that determined the fate of Spain and Portugal in the face of French expansion.

What will be new, however, is access to additional playable factions such as Portugal and the Ottoman Empire, which are unlocked in both the main campaign and the Iberian campaign. With these additions, Total War: NAPOLEON aims to deliver a deep yet approachable historical experience on mobile – ideal for anyone who wants to conquer Europe even during a quick break in the bathroom.
