Unfortunately, this game will never be released, but we can view images and videos of the canceled project.
It was revealed this year that an unannounced Warhammer RPG developed by Thought Pennies was canceled at the end of last year when its publisher withdrew funding. A studio spokesperson released new details, revealing that the project was an Age of Sigmar–based PvE RPG intended for PC, consoles, and mobile platforms. The game was developed in collaboration with Games Workshop and funded by Nexon. Although the partnership was reportedly successful, the spokesperson confirmed that Nexon made a strategic change at the end of 2024. This change led to the project being abandoned and development being halted. This situation was further confirmed by the studio’s recent layoffs.
Months after the project’s existence was leaked, the first development materials appeared, showcasing several pieces of concept art, early gameplay footage, and promotional videos. Based on materials in a former Thought Pennies artist’s portfolio and another developer’s resume, MP1st determined the game’s internal title was Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Dark Frontier. The portfolio features a significant amount of work using Unreal Engine 5. The images depict environments and characters that can also be seen in the gameplay.
The footage shows gameplay from an external perspective of two different heroes, including scenes of close- and long-range combat against various creatures. Most of the footage is from the prologue, as seen in the mission descriptions on the user interface. The combat mechanics include basic genre-typical moves, such as normal and strong attacks, sprinting, jumping, dodging, and latching onto enemies. Additionally, each hero has four special abilities, such as shooting to paralyze or dust enemies, which explodes after a fire attack. One of these abilities appears to be the use of the amulet, which is visible as an icon next to the HP bar. This ability may have functioned as a passive ability, providing health increases or other benefits.
However, Nexon did not continue with the project, so the results of Thought Pennies’ work will never see the light of day. The company announced its licensing agreement with Games Workshop in 2021, so the game underwent about three years of development before being canceled. This would be the second Age of Sigmar game in recent years to have its development halted. The first was Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soul Arena, a multiplayer strategy game that ran from 2022 to mid-2024 before its servers were shut down.
