Rumor has it that Sony’s studio has already started developing the third installment of Destiny, though it may still be quite some time before it’s released.
Two leakers have stated that Bungie has begun development on Destiny 3: the first, Bungie_Leaks, stopped leaking a few months ago to avoid legal issues with the studio; the second, starsiza, shared information originally posted by Bungie_Leaks. They shared information originally posted by a Twitter user named Starsiza. In addition to the rumor about Destiny 3, the tweet mentions that a game similar to the original Destiny 2 has been approved, which, according to the leaker, is the reason for the recent delay in the Destiny 2 schedule. About five hours later, Colony Deaks/Deakstiny, a reliable Bungie informant, confirmed the news in the following tweet:
Destiny 3 is in the works.
Also something along the lines of a Classic D2 game was greenlit. It’s the reason the roadmap was pushed back so much.

Yes, Destiny 3 is in extremely early development. Some of you may have seen a tweet early this afternoon that mentioned that.
We have been sitting on the info for a few weeks now and wanted to wait to talk about this seeing as it is in such an early state, and it just sucks to… pic.twitter.com/VAnw5uB41U

When asked by a follower about Destiny 2 Classic, Colony Deaks replied that he currently has a lot of information about it, but he is still working on confirming it. It’s no secret that Destiny 2 has reached its lowest player count ever on Steam since the release of the Edge of the Universe expansion. A few weeks ago, Sony announced that it had recorded a $204 million impairment charge due to lower-than-expected sales of Destiny 2. Perhaps this convinced the developer and parent company that the only way to revive interest in the sci-fi franchise was to create a new installment.
Rumors about Destiny 3 have circulated before. The first ones surfaced in October 2018 and resurfaced last year, just before the release of the Final Shape expansion, which concluded the ten-year Light and Darkness saga. However, a few months later, Jason Schreier, an editor at Bloomberg, revealed that the third installment was not yet in development. Bungie was working on another Destiny experience, codenamed “Payback,” led by the original Destiny creative directors, Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy. However, it was canceled, and the two developers left the studio. According to Bloomberg, the new strategy was to release smaller experience packs. However, it’s clear that this strategy isn’t working, which may force them to rethink things.
Even if Destiny 3 is secretly in development at Bungie, given the current average development cycle for AAA games, it still has a long way to go before release. We probably won’t hear anything concrete for three to five years, so Destiny 2 will likely continue for a while longer. The Star Wars–inspired Renegades expansion is coming out on December 2.
