Frostpunk 1886 Makes Leadership Hurt in All the Right Ways

The icy strategy game that once let you enslave children without losing a wink of sleep is returning in a remastered edition that promises to make every cruel choice feel painfully real. Frostpunk 1886 is still a distant prospect, but 11 bit Studios has finally shown what kind of transformation the project is going through – and why it may become the most human and emotionally striking version of the game yet.

Remakes or remasters of relatively recent games usually face skepticism, but it’s a different story when a revamped project comes back with ideas, systems, and themes that simply couldn’t be implemented during its original development. 11 bit Studios – one of the strongest teams currently working in the industry – is doing exactly that with Frostpunk 1886, an expanded and upgraded edition of the 2018 survival classic. This version brings improved visuals, new gameplay mechanics, mod support, and even a nomination in one of the categories for the upcoming 2025 Game Awards.

If the name Frostpunk 1886 rings a bell, that’s because it was officially announced eight months ago, with the note that it would not be ready anytime soon. Now, during the 11 bit Studios Digital Showcase 2025 – an event designed to outline the studio’s creative roadmap and current licenses – the Polish team has finally given a first look at what the next few years will hold.

11 bit Studios Wants Frostpunk 1886 To Be More Human And Visually Authentic

According to the studio, Frostpunk 1886 is “more than just a remaster or an updated version”; they are expanding it with a volume of new content that far exceeds what the original 2018 title offered. “One of the areas we’ve improved the most is the presence of New London’s inhabitants,” explains game director Maciej Sułecki in the new developer video. Unlike the first Frostpunk, this version aims to bring players closer to the citizens of the frozen city. Thanks to motion-captured individual animations and more expressive character behavior, emotional immersion should increase dramatically.

Most improvements fall under visual enhancements, but they have a direct impact on gameplay. Those who remember the 2018 release know Frostpunk was acclaimed for its oppressive atmosphere, demanding survival mechanics, and dramatic weather effects. Upgrading to Unreal Engine 5 gives the team clear advantages: better lighting, sharper textures, and polished visual fidelity that push the frozen-apocalypse immersion even further.

For now, Frostpunk 1886 remains an exciting but distant project. And despite some retailers estimating a 2026 launch, reality is far less optimistic. As Sułecki says in the video, “the game is still about two years away from release,” reinforcing two messages: players must be patient, and anything shown so far is still subject to change.
