The One Thing The Witcher 3 Was Missing Is Finally Here – You Can Now Co-Op With a Friend (Thanks to a Mod)

The only thing The Witcher 3 was still missing has finally arrived thanks to a mod. You can now play the fantasy RPG alongside a friend. A fan project has created custom servers to play The Witcher 3 with friends, although it comes with limitations meant to prevent errors. The Witcher 3 now has “online multiplayer” thanks to a mod: this is how Witcher Online works.

If you’ve ever wondered why The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt doesn’t include any online or co-op option, it’s because CD Projekt RED wanted to pour every resource into building a unique, unforgettable fantasy RPG. They pulled it off, and even took home Game of the Year 2025. Still, as the years went by, plenty of players kept noticing the lack of a cooperative mode, but now there’s a promising community project that aims to fill that hole.

This Is Witcher Online

As Rock Paper Shotgun reported, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has just received a mod that would’ve sounded impossible only a few years ago.

The mod is called Witcher Online, and it allows players to set up online sessions where multiple people can explore the Continent at the same time. It’s not an official co-op mode and it’s not a major redesign of the game either, but it does offer a fresh way to inhabit – or simply share – its world, with more than one Geralt of Rivia roaming around.

The creators also warn that this is primarily a social experience: you join a custom server, team up with other players, and wander through cities together. Communication is intentionally limited, since you can only interact through a handful of basic emotes. Right now, groups of up to five players are supported, and the fun is in setting up simple plans like riding together, swimming, exploring, or hanging out in a tavern chatting while the game keeps running.

The downside of Witcher Online is that even though you can complete quests and contracts at the same time, other players can’t actually help you fight, solve puzzles, or finish objectives. The goal is to synchronize and progress in parallel, trying to enter cutscenes together and coordinate decisions as much as possible. The mod’s author, Rejuvenate7, chose this approach to reduce the risk of save corruption or crashes.

If you want to install it, you’ll need to own the game on Steam or GOG, update it to version 4.04, install the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine DLCs, apply a community mod, and follow the official setup guide.
