Garfield Has Teamed Up with Magic: The Gathering!

This isn’t just a pipe dream – it’s an official collaboration, despite how different the two IPs may seem.

Over the past few years, Magic’s Secret Lairs mini-sets have increasingly emphasized humor. These sets are typically limited-edition reprints of old cards with new artwork aimed primarily at collectors. The Dwight cards from The Office are perfect examples of this shift, and the upcoming Secret Lair set, Cats Are the Best, continues in this vein. It contains 15 Garfield cards that you can add to your Commander deck, leaving your friends utterly astonished.

The cards will be released in three sets of five. The first set is based on the question, “What if some of Richard Garfield’s original Magic: The Gathering cards were reimagined with images from the famous Garfield comic strip?” Thus, classics like Swords to Plowshares and Counterspell appear with images of Garfield pushing Odie off the table or slapping Jon Arbuckle. (We completely agree with the latter, since Jon Arbuckle absolutely needs to be stopped.)

The “Motivationally Challenged” series draws inspiration from workplace motivational posters, so the “Ponder” card is titled “Hang in There,” and “The Beast Within” is titled “I Hate Mondays.” (Hating Mondays is typical of Garfield.) Things get strange in the third series, “Our Only Thought Is to Entertain You,” where artists can reinterpret Garfield in a psychedelic style on cards like “Molten Collapse” and “Maddening Hex.” We fully support giving people an official opportunity to show up to a Tuesday night game with a card featuring everyone’s favorite lasagna-loving maniac as an Eldrazi, given how often people bring homemade cards to Magic games that swap out the official card art for lewd manga drawings.

Garfield is coming to Secret Lair as part of the “Cats Are the Best” super deal, which starts on June 15 at 9 AM Pacific. Sign up for notifications on the Secret Lair website to try to get a copy before they sell out!
