The development team was unable to find a new owner, so they had no choice but to shut down.
Earlier this year, the French company Nacon filed for bankruptcy, leading to a similar fate for some of its studios, including Cyanide, developer of the Styx series, Spiders, and a few others. Midgar Studio, developer of Edge of Eternity and Edge of Memories, also suffered the consequences of Nacon’s collapse. However, there was a glimmer of hope for the French development studio because it was actively seeking a buyer. Unfortunately, no one purchased the studio within the required timeframe. Jérémy Zeler-Maury, the founder of Midgar Studio, confirmed that the studio has ceased operations.
“Today, Midgar Studio comes to an end. This is not the message I had hoped to write. I had hoped to return and announce that we had found a buyer. Unfortunately, the court has ordered the liquidation of Midgar Studio. Over the past few weeks, we worked until the very end to find a solution that could preserve the company and the team. Despite exploring every avenue and enlisting the help of many, no solution could be found in time,” the studio founder wrote in a heartfelt post on LinkedIn.
It’s worth noting that Edge of Memories was still in development. It was showcased at Gamescom last year, but the plan was for it to be released in the fourth quarter of 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. Nacon probably wasn’t too concerned about the elephant in the room, as Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series on November 19. The game was scheduled for release between October and December, though a delay to early 2027 was always possible.
Given all this, we must ask with some trepidation: Which studio will be the next to fall victim to Nacon’s bankruptcy?
