If it were up to him, Valve would never release any game that has a number three in its title.
Chet Faliszek wrote the Half-Life 2 episodes, as well as the Left 4 Dead and Portal games and other Valve projects. Therefore, the internet interprets everything he says as confirmation that Half-Life 3 is in development and will be announced at the next online event, no matter how insignificant. Faliszek responded cautiously and specifically to a comment claiming that it would be easy for Valve to make Half-Life 3.
As he pointed out in another video, he does not share the obsession among today’s fans with deep backstories. He’s a character writer who’s more interested in how people react to things in the moment than the things they’re reacting to. He’s also justified in not wanting to deal with people who care deeply about sacred texts and complain about trivial details. Faliszek also mentioned that he once spoke with Bungie about collaborating. As if it weren’t enough that he called sequels a nightmare, he reiterates that he has no interest in returning to Half-Life.
“This isn’t saying that something’s happening; I’m not trying to allude to anything. I’m going to talk about some stuff from 10-plus years ago. I’m not trying to say anything. OK?” The plot could go anywhere. Here’s the thing: For some people, it could go one way, but for others, it could go another way. When people ask me, ‘Oh man, don’t you wish you could?’ No! I almost never want to touch something with lore or backstory, not even something like Left 4 Dead. I don’t want to touch anything old. At this point, I don’t need people who remember things better than I do yelling at me about changing the history of lore from 50 years ago.
But all of Bungie’s games have this. They have so much lore that it terrifies me. I don’t know that much about my own life, let alone your game. I don’t want to write in that universe. To me, any sequel is just a disaster nightmare that I never want to experience. So I’m not going to do it. As for Half-Life 3, no. I wouldn’t touch that with a ten-foot pole. Not even a grav gun separating me from a 10-foot pole. Not even a grav gun between me and a 10-foot pole. I wouldn’t do it with Dog’s arms,” said Faliszek.
So, even if something ever does happen, he won’t get attached to it.
