The PC version of Halo: Campaign Evolved officially lacks local split-screen co-op, even though the necessary feature is already present inside the game. A newly released mod activates the dormant option, allowing two players to experience the campaign together on a single PC much like they could with the original Halo.
Halo: Campaign Evolved takes the series back to 2001 by rebuilding one of the most important and influential shooters ever made for modern hardware. The remake updates the original adventure visually and mechanically, but enhanced editions of this kind often leave popular features behind. On PC, local split-screen co-op became one of the most noticeable omissions. A community-made modification has now restored the ability for two people to play through the campaign together on the same computer.
The Halo Campaign Evolved Split-screen Coop mod was published on Nexus Mods by Jpurd123 only 24 hours after the game’s official launch. The creator was able to produce a working solution so quickly because the split-screen functionality was already built into the remake and merely disabled in the PC edition. This indicates that the game technically supports local cooperative play, although Halo Studios apparently chose to restrict the computer version to online co-op. Split-screen remains officially available on Xbox Series X/S.
Installing the mod is only the first part of the process, as several additional steps must be followed to activate the mode properly. Players need to select Cooperative Campaign, press A on the second controller, and then use Ctrl+Y on the keyboard. A new campaign must also be started with a fresh save, since the modification apparently does not function correctly when an existing campaign save is already present. The setup is not especially complicated, but its instructions need to be followed precisely.
It Is Not Perfect, but Halo Can Be Played Like It Was 25 Years Ago
The current version still comes with several restrictions. Split-screen is limited to two players even though the remake supports online co-op for as many as four participants. The mod has only been tested with the Steam edition, meaning compatibility with the PC Game Pass and Microsoft Store releases cannot be guaranteed. Both players must also use controllers, because combining one controller with keyboard and mouse causes the input system to become confused.
The modification therefore remains somewhat experimental, but it already restores the classic couch co-op experience. The most unusual part of the discovery is that the feature did not have to be created from the ground up: the necessary system was already inside the game and simply unavailable to PC users. The former 343 Industries made a comparable decision with the PC version of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which also launched without official local split-screen support.
