Saber Interactive has continuously expanded the game, and players have happily continued to play it. And this certainly isn’t over yet.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 recently concluded its second year of post-launch support with two consecutive updates. Update 14, “The Confrontation Update,” introduces a new enemy and significantly expands the game’s PvP options. Since the release of The Confrontation, a separate update has added Steam Workshop support to Saber Interactive’s hugely successful shooter. The Confrontation Update primarily focuses on Space Marine 2’s PvP mode, Eternal War. It introduces two new PvP arenas: Sanctum, a medium-sized map, and Facility, which Saber describes as one of the game’s most compact PvP maps. Along with these maps, the update introduces weekly PvP rewards. You can earn cosmetic items and other in-game rewards by playing matches and completing challenges.
If you prefer the cooperative mode, the update introduces a new enemy: the Scarab Occult Terminator Sorcerer. This tough mini-boss will appear in the game’s Operations mode and possesses a wide range of abilities. It can create clones of itself, teleport across the battlefield, and attack players with a massive laser beam.
As far as Steam Workshop support goes, we’re still in the early stages with Space Marine 2 mods. However, there are a few player-created add-ons worth checking out. The most notable is Astartes Overhaul, which has been available on NexusMods for some time. It rebalances operations and adds new weapons and customization options. It introduces three new playable classes (Terminator, Chaplain, and Apothecary) as well as four new weapons, including an Assault Bolter and an Artifex Bolt Rifle with optional ignition bolts.
Most of the other currently available mods are add-ons for the Astartes Overhaul. These range from additional execution animations to the ability to play with squads of six or nine members. However, there are also a few non-Astartes mods: “Health on Executions” makes Space Marine 2’s gruesome finishing moves more similar to the glory-kill system in the DOOM reboot. “Rogue Trader Tyranids” reimagines the game’s insectoid threat to resemble the 1985 models more closely.
Although this marks the end of the second year of updates for Space Marine, Saber Interactive has confirmed that they will continue to support the game for at least another year. The developer did not specify what new features to expect over the next twelve months but will present a detailed roadmap in September, which marks the game’s second anniversary.
