Is Marvel’s Venom still planned as Insomniac’s next game? With the release of Marvel’s Wolverine just days away, it’s likely that the studio is shifting its focus to its next project.

A December 2023 leak revealed that the studio has been working on a standalone Venom game for some time. However, since there hasn’t been an official announcement about the project, fans are wondering if development is still underway. According to leaker Nate the Hate, development is indeed still in full swing, based on his latest information. He doesn’t know when the announcement will be made, though.

The December 2023 leak occurred due to a ransomware attack called Rhysida, resulting in approximately 1.3 million Insomniac files falling into the wrong hands. Hidden among these files was the studio’s development roadmap, which listed Venom at the very top. The leaked plan stated: Venom is set to arrive in 2025, followed by Wolverine in 2026, Spider-Man 3 in 2028, a new Ratchet & Clank in 2029, and an X-Men game in 2030. The unannounced new IPs are scheduled for the early to mid-2030s. According to the leaked materials, the game’s full title would have been Venom: Lethal Protector, referencing the 1993 comic book series that gave the character his best-known alias. The project’s slides revealed that the game would pick up directly where Spider-Man 2 left off — in which Venom played a prominent role — and lead into Spider-Man 3.

Internal documents that were leaked revealed that the planned budget was $120 million. This is significantly lower than the $300 million that was spent on Spider-Man 2. This suggests that the game will be shorter and more similar to Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The documents also revealed details about the game’s scope, including a campaign lasting 8–10 hours with 12 main missions and optional content such as bases, heists, and collectibles. After the late 2023 leak, the next major rumor came from MP1st last year. It confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine is set to be released in 2026 and that Marvel’s Venom is still in development. According to sources, Eddie Brock will be the symbiote’s host instead of Harry Osborn. This will make Venom’s appearance significantly closer to his comic book counterpart. A few months ago, fans were alarmed when Miles Morales’s voice actor, Nadji Jeter, suggested the project was canceled due to Tony Todd’s untimely death. Todd voiced the character in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. However, Jason Schreier, an editor at Bloomberg, quickly refuted this claim. He reassured players that development on the standalone Venom game is underway.

Nate the Hate’s latest announcement is yet another sign that we’ll eventually get to play this game. When that will happen, however, is a more complicated question. According to Insomniac Games’ leaked schedule, the game was supposed to be released before Wolverine, but it has clearly been delayed. The end of next year seems like a logical timeframe, but Sony’s release calendar suggests that slot may be reserved for Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. However, since available information suggests that the game will be mid-sized, it’s not inconceivable that both titles could be released in fall 2027.
